Crap.

I lost an earring.

Not just any earring.

One of the black opal earrings my mother gave me for my seventeenth birthday, the pair I wear something like 355 days out of the year. In other words, the single most emotionally important pair of earrings that I own.

And I had to snag it on my purse strap and rip it out while walking on a cloudy evening next to a gravel bed in front of a gas station.

As the cherry of cruelty on top of the sundae of my despair, after I'd spent about fifteen minutes hunting on my hands and knees, it started raining.

I keep telling myself that losing it is probably karmic payment for something, that something good will happen now.

It's helping a little. My ear still hurts.

They do. Opals will crack if you just put them away in a jewelery box. they are a water stone and will actually dry out and *snap!*. It's recommended that you touch your opals often (for the oils to "moisturize" the stones) and thay you don't "dry store" them for extended periods of time.

I too wore those earings all the time but the shower was seriously hot. It's also said that you should never buy opals for yourself (they will crack) and only accept opals from someone you truely love (or they will crack).
