Crap.

I lost an earring.

Not just any earring.

One of the black opal earrings my mother gave me for my seventeenth birthday, the pair I wear something like 355 days out of the year. In other words, the single most emotionally important pair of earrings that I own.

And I had to snag it on my purse strap and rip it out while walking on a cloudy evening next to a gravel bed in front of a gas station.

As the cherry of cruelty on top of the sundae of my despair, after I'd spent about fifteen minutes hunting on my hands and knees, it started raining.

I keep telling myself that losing it is probably karmic payment for something, that something good will happen now.

It's helping a little. My ear still hurts.

My condolences on your loss. Seriously. It's really lousy to lose something that means a lot to you like that.

I hope something good does happen to you, and that your ear feels better soon.

Thanks. I usually don't get this badly wiped out about losing material objects, but that earring was pretty important to me.

My ear's doing better, but it's still mad at me.

I know it's no consolation to losing something you have all kinds of attachments to but if you don't find the other earing, consider having the remaining one made into a pendant or have the stone reset into a ring. It's not the same but at least you still have one of the opals.

A word of caution though, opals don't like hot, soapy water. They will crack. Once cracked, the stones are pretty much toast. I know this as I cracked both of my rainbow opal earings when I took a blistering hot shower one day.

That's actually a pretty good thought. I might do that, though first I need to get a new pair of studs before my ears heal shut.

Mine didn't seem to mind going in the shower too much, and I wore them constantly--though that might have helped, because opals like skin oils a lot.

They do. Opals will crack if you just put them away in a jewelery box. they are a water stone and will actually dry out and *snap!*. It's recommended that you touch your opals often (for the oils to "moisturize" the stones) and thay you don't "dry store" them for extended periods of time.

I too wore those earings all the time but the shower was seriously hot. It's also said that you should never buy opals for yourself (they will crack) and only accept opals from someone you truely love (or they will crack).

Thank you. My ear's stinging a bit, but I think half of it is psychosomatic. X_x

*hugs* I'm really sorry to hear that, hon. But maybe it's as you said: karma at work. =3 And maybe you can find a use for the remaining earring.

*hugs again* I hope you feel better.

I really hope that something good happens now. I managed to give myself a headache trying not to cry on the way home, and I'll probably go to bed massively early. Blarg. Squared.

Ah, I'm sorry you lost your ear ring, especially in a manner which involved yanking of any kind. I've snagged my piercings on clothing/purses and it's no fun. I hope you feel better and things look up for you!

I've snagged this earring on towels before, but this time was worse than that. Thank you for the kind wishes, though.

That sounds sad, but maybe it was a little sign for something that has to do family wise. At least you still have the other one.

True. And maybe I can get a replacement for the lost one.

Dude, if I were you I would totally go back and hunt through those pebbles again. It's gotta be there, it didn't move on its own! Get a friend/s to help you! There more the better! TT^TT Good luck, hope you DO find it. D:

I lost it in front of the busiest gas station on the busiest street in my area. If it bounced into the road, it could be anywhere in the tri-state area by now. If it went into the gravel, it joins a lot of broken glass and bits of metal and a zillion other sparkly things that look just like it until picked up. It really was the absolute worst place to lose it, so I'm kind of resigned now.
