Bad week for fandom.
May. 30th, 2007 12:25 amAs a few of you may have noticed,
pornish_pixies got hit with the banhammer. They ain't the only ones. And apparently one small vigilante organization with no links to actual law enforcement or anti-child-predation groups is responsible. WarriorsForInnocence.org is apparently pressuring LJ and SixApart to permanently suspend certain journals and comms. Some of them are very not cool and involve real people getting really abused by real sick bastards who think it's kosher to do this and then post on LJ about it. Some of them, on the other hand, are fandom sites, including fic archives, fic authors, and several roleplaying journals (!).
One Piece =/= HP. We're a lot smaller, a lot less well known, and a much tinier target. Chances of us getting hit with splooge from this wankstorm? Next to nil. BUT. Purging your interests of anything triggery (shota, incest, D-cest, and Zeff/Sanji come to mind for the OP fandom) and locking adult material is considered to be a very good thing right now. Mine's already locked, fortunately.
Shota gives me the hardcore creepy-crawlies, and incest is one of my big squicks. But I'll defend the right of people to post fanfiction on the subject until my dying breath.
ETA: Beat to it by OPY. Now here's hoping that shiny and COMPLETELY PUBLIC post doesn't bring the comm some unhappy attention, because I'm DAMN sure there's Zeff/Sanji shotacon somewhere deep in the archives and OPY's the only place the entirety of Conspicuous Consumption is posted. Fuck all if I'm losing my bundtfucking, especially considering I can't repost or archive it without
ptps' permission. *skitters off to go save it to her computer*
ETA 2:
bookshop's excellent discourse on why fen need to stand up for themselves. Sheeeeeeeit, at this rate our fanfic panel might wind up being half about this and the FanLib drama and half about actually writing fanfic. -.-;

Date: 2007-05-30 05:42 am (UTC)Or rather, I suppose the question is: Do you want your panel to be about the actual WRITING of fanfiction or just WHAT fanfiction is anyway and what all that entails? Two very different and worthy subjects that seem kind of hard to tackle mutually in the limited time constraint of a panel, esp. if you get stuck with a crappy slot like last year.
That being said, I agree that it was horribly unconsidered for that OPY post to be public since it puts the entire community at risk. Then again, minus some Zeff/Sanji - which I believe is largely Yochan's - there's nothing much technically underage unless you throw in Chopper but hey then you get quasi-bestiality to go along with it. Of course the incest deletions, much more irritating than the pedophilia excuse since incest between cousins is technically legal in some states and bro/sis incest negates the legal needs of marriage, could affect us but I don't think the INTERESTS of the comm list anything that way so I would suspect we're largely safe.
Orz, I feel like it's just one thing after the next lately but the legal questions make 'rising up' just a tad questionable. I believe fanfiction falls under 'fair use' but as this question has never been legally settled in a court of law, it's all risk and one that makes me a tad nervous to want to have out in the open.

Date: 2007-05-30 07:46 am (UTC)and because we want to read porn out loud, so chances are excellent that this particular dramallama will wander into the room and spit on everybody.The main "fen unite" thing that made me go amen was the part about using our spending power as a stick--in other words, actually hitting companies where it hurts. Though admittedly, if my paid account was coming up for renewal, I'd probably be torn between "Stick to my guns! The moral high ground is nigh!" and "ICONS. NO ADS." I'm not in the mood to say "MY SMOKER/ZEFF STUFF IS EVERY BIT AS LEGITIMATE AS ANYTHING THAT UPPITY BITCH CHARLOTTE BRONTE WROTE." I just want to not worry that some moral crusader is going to hit me with a brick and get my LJ deleted just because I wrote about Sanji fucking a pie, which is probably illegal somewhere.
First cousin marriage is a-okay in Maryland, by the by. LET'S HEAR IT FOR REDNECKS.

Date: 2007-05-30 09:00 am (UTC)reading porn out loudhaving a Q&A portion does sound like a good idea. Here's to hoping the audience has decent questions. By the by, I assume this means that you all finally heard back from those slow pokes at Otacorp about getting your panel?And the moral quandry of no ads v. sticking to one's guns, yes I can totally see what you mean from that standpoint. I DID boycott Viz for a while after the Zoro/Zolo debacle but, darn it all, they started carrying stuff I REALLY wanted and I broke down. I suppose the question would become just how long one could stand those damnably annoying ads.
and the lack of shiny shiny multiple icons(no subject)

Date: 2007-05-30 02:19 pm (UTC)I'm easily squicked, and not very fond of the type of stories that are being attacked, (Shota, ___cest ect) But even I know that just because someone writes shota doesn't mean they are a paedophile. And everyone is entitled to write what they want.
If the damn idiots wanted to do something they should have gone to the organisations that are already in place, after all they know what they are doing!
