Trust the Japanese to build a robotic exoskeleton that's not only useful but also looks REALLY DAMN COOL.

Seriously, it looks like something out of an anime and responds to nerve signals instead of actual muscle movement. AND it increases your strength by a factor of ten. That is EPIC.

Idle curiosity moment:

For all the tabletop gamers on my flist, what is your ABSOLUTE FAVORITE special ability found in any RPG? Favorite spell, Discipline, Boon, class ability, cantrip, stupidly awesome and badly unbalanced Racial Ability That Should Not Be, etcetera?

Also, if you've horrifically abused same (or seen it being done), please share with the rest of the class. >:3

Who shot JR.

No, actually I'd like to see classified DARPA weapons reports. Also, finding out what the world's super-intelligence agencies and top government officials plan to do in the event of a nuclear holocaust would be pretty sweet. You know the guys with their fingers on the shiny red button have precise, detailed plans for what they're going to do if they ever have to push it. So what is it? Vault-Tec technology? Secret lead-lined bunkers? Undersea installations? Inquiring minds want to know before they're "detained indefinitely" in secret CIA prisons.

Also: FIGHT ME, HOORS.

Pope Says Condoms "Not the Answer" in Fight Against AIDS in Africa: Emperor Popetine apparently of the opinion that if you're having recreational sex you deserve to die, also, religious aid workers ask what His Holiness is smoking

Benedict had never directly addressed condom use. He has said that the Roman Catholic Church is in the forefront of the battle against AIDS. The Vatican encourages sexual abstinence to fight the spread of the disease.

...

"You can't resolve it with the distribution of condoms," the pope told reporters aboard the Alitalia plane headed to Yaounde, Cameroon, where he will begin a seven-day pilgrimage on the continent. "On the contrary, it increases the problem."

What.

WHAT.

Seriously, WHAT THE FUCKING HELL IS THIS BULLSHIT.

Some priests and nuns working with those living with HIV/AIDS question the church's opposition to condoms amid the pandemic ravaging Africa.

"Excuse us, sir, but people are dying horribly. Can we pleeeease pass out condoms now, seeing as they're the only thing that makes a serious dent in the transmission rates of STDs?"
"No. Tell them to stop having sex."
"Sir, that's not really going to--"
"SILENCE! I AM THE POPE! THAT MEANS I WIN!"

This 'don't use condoms, use abstinence' thing is, like all abstinence-based programs, utterly worthless and bordering on criminally negligent. A lot of women in certain regions of Africa don't get to turn to men who want to have sex with them and go, "I'm sorry, but I'm saving myself for a mutually monogamous relationship." And hell, completely monogamous marriages are rare enough in cultures that glorify it, much less in cultures that say a man isn't a man unless he's getting some booty on the side.

THIS IS GOING TO KILL PEOPLE. AND OTHER PEOPLE WILL SAY IT'S OKAY, BECAUSE THEY WERE OBVIOUSLY SINNERS AND DESERVED TO DIE.

ETA: France, Germany, UN AIDS Task Force Reaction to Pope's Comments Best Summed Up as "WTH, Benedict, WTH."

"Condoms save lives, in Europe as well as on other continents," the ministers said. "Modern assistance to the developing world today must make access to family planning available to the poorest of the poor — especially the use of condoms. Anything else would be irresponsible."

I'd love to travel back to the Victorian era, provided I could be wealthy, white, and male. Mostly the male bit, actually--any time travel past about 1920 or so and us girls are boned.

That said, the spirit of the Victorian era, when there were vast expanses of the world left to explore and when it looked like modern science could fix anything if you just gave it a year or two, is something I'd love to experience firsthand. The industrial pollution, exploitation and destruction of native populations, and brutal oppression of the poor, not so much, but man, science was Science with a capital S back then. What I wouldn't give to meet Nikola Tesla, even if he was batshit insane! And the science fiction back then was incredible--Jules Verne was still writing, Poe tried his hand at science fiction a time or two, and magazine serials abounded. ♥

It's the meme that never ends. Srsly. )

There are some who say that pessimism IS realism. These people are generally pessimists, so I guess I'm a pessimist. I gave optimism a shot in college and discovered that no, thinking happy thoughts does not protect you from the world fucking you over. Might as well be a pessimist--at least then I'm expecting it when bad things inevitably happen.

On a related topic: God, I hate February. Nothing good ever happens in February. My new car's in the shop already, I'm STILL dealing with insurance paperwork, and Singlehood Awareness Day/Purchase Sex Via Jewelry, Candy, and Flowers Day approaches. DX

ETA: You know what would make today quit sucking? Me going home and spending the rest of the day watching Ryoma hit things REALLY HARD with his robot while shouting angrily. He's oddly cathartic.

...after a few horrific days of stressing massively over the financing for it, that is. I am now the proud owner of a gunmetal grey 2006 Scion xA. He needs a name. D: Any suggestions? As far as I go, I'm mostly healed, though the insurance paperwork may kill me. @_@

And now, a meme I stole from Kaja!

WHAT IS THIS BUTTFUCKERY.

You make people wait a full year for your "new, redesigned, improved" dolls and you give them this? WTF, DollShe, WTF. The same guy who designed my Hound turned out this X-Files reject. I AM DEEPLY SHAMED. I also feel the need to hold Lassa and reassure myself that at least he hasn't been abducted by aliens.

In other news, I was in a serious car accident Thursday night. My beloved Hanako is no more, and I'm....dented. And on Percoset. Whee! Nothing permanently broken though, and the nice people at the hospital said I should be fine. Trying to figure out what car to get--I loved my Honda Fit, but can't stand the '09 Fits and used Fits are nigh-impossible to find. D: Currently leaning towards a Scion xD, since it's got most of the things I loved about my car and even if I go and get new one, it's a couple grand cheaper than the '09 Fit.

The first five people to respond to this post will get something made by me. It will be about or tailored to those five lucky "victims."

This offer does have some restrictions and limitations:
- I make no guarantees that you will like what I make!
- What I create will be just for you.
- It'll be done this year.
- You have no clue what it's going to be. It may be fic. It may be poetry. I may draw or paint something. I may bake you something and mail it to you. Who knows? Not you, that's for sure!
- I reserve the right to do something extremely strange.

The catch? Oh, the catch is that you have to put this in your journal as well, if you expect me to do something for you!

DUDE.

Merry Christmas, those of you who celebrate it! Happy Winter Consumerism Day to those of you who don't.

Speaking of consumerism, I actually just finished my Christmas shopping. >>; Inconvenient paycheck timing is inconvenient. Oh well, better late than never.

My haul thus far:
~Cold hard cash from my mom and Tiff's grandma.
~A microfleece scarf/hat/gloves set from Tiff's mom. I'm excited about the gloves; they'll be my first pair in about two years. :D Also, a sweet fake tree so Tiff and I can quit failing at tree.
~A mysterious present of mystery from [livejournal.com profile] mel_the_second and [livejournal.com profile] gamer_of_chaos. I get that later tonight.
~A Treasury of Foolishly Forgotten Americans from [livejournal.com profile] proletariat_x. Is delicious histories, I must read them.
~Lip gloss of yummeh and hot cocoa from [livejournal.com profile] sherriaisling. :D Also, PIRATE STICKERS.
~A cute handmade card and bookmark from [livejournal.com profile] genuinelie.
~A doll wig from Tiff that has yet to arrive in the mail. Fail, doll company, fail. But wig = win.
~Delicious theoretical cookies from [livejournal.com profile] mettathron. I get those on Saturday.
~An evening of tabletop RPGing from [livejournal.com profile] jacks_shadow. I also get that on Saturday.
~An AWESOME NEW COMPUTER, from...me. Ah well, I love presents from me, I always know just what to get me.
~Getting to sleep in this morning without an angry cat yelling outside my door, from Vivi.

Pretty good haul, wot wot?

Day 8:

Epic party! We threw a party for [livejournal.com profile] gamer_of_chaos' birthday and, because he is a hueg gamer, there were no fewer than four gaming systems hooked up and running the entire time. I got to play the Versus mode on Left 4 Dead and HOLY FUCK is it ever fun to be a zombeh and rip chunks off of your friends. Also, there were delicious foods and cheesecake and most of my favorite people in the world. :D Awesome Saturday was awesome.

And thus concludes the happiness meme. In future happiness, ELEVEN-DAY VACATION FUCK YEAH.

Day 7:

Today was "See Lots of Friends" day! [livejournal.com profile] desyhand was visiting from California, [livejournal.com profile] brian_kun and [livejournal.com profile] dethorats swung down to our neck of the woods to hang out for a little while, and our friend Teffy popped by to say hello. [livejournal.com profile] brian_kun and [livejournal.com profile] dethorats brought me some very belated and unexpected birthday presents, and holy crap, they actually braved a doll website for me despite being enormously creeped out by BJDs! Lassa now has naff boots and a lovely new shirt. :D So despite today starting off crappy, it turned out good in the end.
