Title: Cigarettes (FAIL!)
Series: One Piece.
One Piece: Not mine.
Rating: G.
Summary: Set on the Baratie, right before Arlong Park.
The smell of cigarettes reminded her of Bellemere-san.
It wasn't the same brand, but it was very close. He didn't smoke them all the way down to the filters like Bellemere-san always had, but he did make his cigarettes last a stunningly long time. The familar sound of a fresh pack of cigarettes being slapped into the palm of a hand reminded her of blue-tinted smoke glowing in thick leaf-dappled sunlight, reminded her of when Bellemere-san would sometimes go without for a week or two because Nojiko needed new shoes or Nami very badly wanted a new pen. Cigarettes reminded her of normal, reminded her of home, reminded her of everything she didn't have.
French wine instead of mikan juice, gold hair nothing like pink at all. Lots of people smoked cigarettes, and their girl-crazy waiter just happened to be one of them. She shouldn't get upset over the fact that he just happened to smoke the cheap kind, like Bellemere-san had had to.
She decided to go back to Cocoyashi Island just a little bit early. Because Luffy was occupied with paying back the owner of the Baratie and couldn't stop her, and because ships came and left this restaurant all the time. It was convenient and quite sensible to leave now, especially when she was so close to her goal.
Not because the ghost of a thousand mikan-touched cigarettes chased her away, burning memories in unfamilar hands.
