Because SOMEONE can't get online in a timely manner, I'm posting this song that reminds me of DBS rather a lot. There's your inspiration, dear.

XD I fail at life and OPY100 topics. I wrote this last week but couldn't manage to trim it down, so I wound up leaving it full length.

Title: Raven and the Sea
Series: One Piece.
One Piece: Not mine.
Rating: G.
Summary: Light Luffy/Usopp. Water 7, meet folklore.

Long ago, when the Age of Blood and Gold was young and the world was full of a thousand dreams, Raven developed a passion for something he could never have. He coveted the Sea’s lovely pearls, but he could not swim to reach them. But Raven was very clever, so he swiftly conceived of a plan to get what he so badly wanted.

Raven flew down to the shore and spoke to the Sea. He offered her a test of skill and luck: they would each create a human champion and imbue it with all that they considered virtuous. Then their opponent would select a single flaw for the champion, a serious one, so that the two sides would be fairly balanced. After ten summers and seven, the fated children would be drawn together. They would fight, and the winner would choose the forfeit of his or her choice.

The Sea did not trust Raven, for she had ears in a thousand lands and had heard all the tales of Raven’s trickery and deceitfulness. But Raven had offered her her choice of prize, and the Sea deeply desired Raven’s ability to fly. She was sorely tempted by the thought of going to the sky and touching her lover, the Sun, more often than the twice a day the gods had allotted her. Cautiously, the Sea agreed, but only on the condition that Raven go first.

So Raven pulled out one of his long flying feathers with his sharp beak, mixed the blood from his wing with warm sun-kissed forest earth, and painted a boy with a long proud nose and loam-black hair, clever and quick and good with his hands, swift of foot and tongue with eyes sharper than the North Wind. When Raven was done, he tucked his feather into the boy’s heart, that he might always remind others of Raven in his ways. Raven stepped away satisfied and glowing with pride, certain that nothing could cripple such a cunning and skillful boy.

The Sea reached out with her fingers of foam and turned the boy’s natural good sense and caution to cowardice, washing away his bravery with her waves until it turned to sand and crumbled away. Raven tore at his feathers in rage, knowing that his opponent was wilier than he’d given her credit for.

The Sea then crafted a boy with dark hair and a sweet smile from coral and foam, gifting him with strength and confidence and luck, a fierce temper that was slow to heat, and an uncanny gift for making things right. He was as persistent as the pounding waves, flexing around his problems before returning to strike them again and again until they were worn quite away. When the boy sat on the seashore, whole and complete, the Sea tauntingly dropped one of her pearls into his heart so that it might always shine with light and happiness and he might always be drawn to that which created him. The Sea was smugly content, for her champion would not only fight, but would have friends who would fight for him. Raven’s champion, a weak and trembling child, had no chance.

And then Raven, crowing his laughter to the winds, wrapped the smiling boy in his wings and cursed him with surpassing love. The child’s good nature and friendliness transformed into an overwhelming need, and the boy’s heart drew all of its mighty strength from his love of his nakama. The Sea raged and foamed and smashed herself against the shore, for Raven’s curse was crueler by far than her own, but she had given her word. She reluctantly tied the scarlet thread of Fate around her champion’s wrist, binding him to the other boy, and let him go into the world.

And so it has come to pass that, seventeen years and a thousand tears later, Raven still does not have his pearls, and while the Sea leaps angrily into the sky in some places, she has not yet managed to learn to fly. The scarlet thread is tangled now, knotted and frayed and nearly broken where it weaves a thick web around a ship with a sheep’s head. Time slowly makes the thread shorter, pulling so tight that both boys bleed and cry. But they welcome the pain, for it means they’re still together.

Equating Raven to Usopp is such a smart idea! And the curses, oh so clever on both parts. This story hurt, but in a good way.

Glad your day started going better, too.

Usopp is like the bastard lovechild of Coyote and Raven. He's got long noses and lying on both sides of his family. XD

I'm glad it startedi mprovign too, thoguh apparently I had company--everyone I spoke to had had an awful day yesterday as well. Someone must've cast some major Entropy magic and managed to 'Dox the whole area. [/MtA geekery]

HATE YOURSELF, YOU CREAMY WHORE, FOR YOUR DESCRIPTIONS > MINE.

Besides, it could have been worse. There could have been an extended metaphor.
