I only have one box full of them. They've been boxed up for 9 years, but some are sentimental favorites or are autographed by the author. (Yeah, that adds a whole 2x multiplier to the nerdiness of my collection...)
I covet your signed books. COVET. *makes grabby hands*
I'm seriously excited about having them all out of their boxes for the first time in six years, even the really crappy ones like Triangle and Shadow Lord and Black Fire (which is arguably the worst Star Trek novel of all time). Eeeee!
You mean it gets worse than Dreadnought and all the other stuff Diane Duane wrote? (I think it's Diane Duane...need to check my box...) All I know is that some of those early Kirk's-Enterprise novels were blatant Mary Sue. My all time favorite has got to be the Kobayashi Maru and that'll be the LAST one I'd ever want to part with...even though it's not one of the autographed ones.
I believe you're referring to Diane Carey. Diane Duane is the one who wrote Spock's World, My Enemy My Ally, The Romulan Way, The Wounded Sky, and other such mindblowingly good books. She also writes the best damn aliens. EVER.
But speaking of Diane Carey, I actually do have quite a soft spot for Dreadnought! and Battlestations!, Mary Sue and all. The main character may have been annoying, but the side characters were entertaining as hell and the plotlines were at least coherent. Black Fire is infinitely worse--it's all about Spock's adventures as a dashing pirate. DASHING. PIRATE. With pierced ears and funky clothes. D:
Carey...right! I always got the 2 "Dianes" mixed up because they seemed to always be writing at the same time. I've got both Dreadnought and Battlestations. I guess it's been too long since I've read them to try to look past the Mary Sue and try to find something positive to the novels.
I've never read Black Fire...and I'll be sure to avoid it now! Good grief...did they use Futurama's "What If" machine or something!? LOL
I owe you an apology. Having reread both Dreadnought! and Battlestations! for the first time since high school, not even the entertainment that is Scanner can make up for the obnoxiousness of Piper. Ye gods, she's a horrible bitch and something of a humanocentric bigot as well. I had to go reread The Romulan Way to get the bad taste out of my brain.
I'm starting to get those little feelings of wanting to look for the box my Trek novels are in. I haven't had them out since I moved here 5 years ago, so "on the bottom / in the back" is a good place to start. Maybe I'll get lucky because the irony is...if my basement didn't take on water in today's snow/ice/rain mix, I wouldn't have so easily found other books that I promised to give to someone. (Always got to move stuff out of water's way...)
I know I have The Romulan Way and other pre-DS9 novels. I usually liked them, but the blatant Mary Sue ones are sour ones in my collection.
