Cost of mtDNA probes: ~$300.
Cost of compensating sick people for a chunk of muscle out of their leg: Depends, how much would you want to be paid for an invasive procedure like that?
Cost of using campus-available equipment: Thankfully free.
Finally getting your fucking grant proposal budget straightened out the night before it's due: Priceless.

Shite I have to do for my grant proposal experiment:

• Get approval from my institution’s review board!!!!!!!! for human experimentation


• Do the informed consent boogie


• Collect KSS subjects—as large group as possible, say n=50?




• Need:




• Age of onset


• Severity of course


• Size of mtDNA deletion, if known


• Have muscle punch biopsies conducted at Hopkins for mtDNA analysis (if not known)






• Compensate subjects


• Homogenize samples


• Run through my spiff-ass mtDNA isolation kit thingie that cost me e-fuckin-nough to pay my rent


• PCR time!


• Run gels!  Wee!


• Southern blot time!  Hardcore!


• Experiment based solely on size of deletion, or on location too?  Just size, for now, easier/cheaper to determine


• Monitor subjects for severity of disease


• Hope funding doesn’t dry up

Now who the hell am I gonna ask for money?
