I just got inside from rescuing a raccoon from the evil clutches of Beefaroni.

This poor raccoon kit (from the family of raccoons that raids our dumpsters regularly) got its head stuck in a can and couldn't get out. It was lying sprawled on the parking lot by the time I found it, too tired to move. At first, I thought it was roadkill, but I'd never seen one of our raccoons get hit by a car. Then I parked (hurrah for early morning Taco Bell runs) and walked over to double-check, and lo and behold, it was a victim of a foul Beefaroni trap. I yanked on the can for a few minutes, raccoon pulling one way and me pulling another, before realizing that this little guy was well and truely stuck and any further measures I could take to get him loose were likely going to end in me getting bitten when yon raccoonlet was liberated from its metal prison. I really don't want to have to get rabies shots. I was contemplating going to get a box and taking him to the 24-hour vet down the street when one of my neighbors shouted down to ask if that was the raccoon she thought it was and if I needed help. She brought down a blanket to wrap the raccoon up in, and the two of us tugging got him out. The raccoon ran off to go find his mom, and I took great pleasure in stomping the crap out of the can.

The moral of this story: Please crush your cans if you're not gonna recycle them. Oh, and Beefaroni is hazardous to everyone, including raccoons.
