Title: Mushrooms
Series: One Piece.

Rating: PG at best.
Summary: Set right after Arlong Park. Sanji doesn't really get a lot of things about his new crewmates.
“I’m not eating them!”
“You’ll eat them and you’ll LIKE IT!”
Sanji was starting to despair of ever understanding anyone on this crew. The captain he’d promised to follow anywhere was certifiably insane, the shitty swordsman was an arrogant asshole, and this whiny little longnosed punk still wouldn’t eat mushrooms. If it weren’t for the beauteous Nami-san and the fact that all of them were somehow strangely competent at what they did, he would have seriously started reconsidering this whole mess.
Right now, halfway to Loguetown, his opinion of Usopp hadn’t changed much since their first squabble on the Baratie—the man was a liar and a waster of perfectly good fungi. Add to that what he’d learned from asking about the Going Merry itself—that this guy apparently had a girl who was crazy about him, gorgeous, rich enough to just hand the crew a ship and not sweat the expense, and had promised to wait for him, but he’d still left her behind—and Sanji was about an inch from thrashing him on principle alone.
True love was a once in a lifetime thing! How could this spineless creature not want to spend every moment with the living goddess who had told him that she was his? That was what proper men were supposed to do! It made Sanji want to spit nails that someone like Sanji, who sought after true love with a passion only exceeded by his desire to find All Blue, was denied such sweet favor while someone like Usopp, who casually tossed love to the side, found it right in his own backyard.
It had been heavily on his mind as of late. So somewhere in the midst of all the shouting over mushrooms, Sanji bellowed out, “Dammit, you don’t deserve a girl like yours!”
Usopp went very, very still, and Sanji tensed, automatically dropping into a fighting stance. He could take Usopp, no sweat, but the man had proven to be full of tricks in the past.
Usopp’s answer was almost too low to hear. “No. I don’t.” He lifted his chin defiantly after a moment, jaw setting. “Why do you think I’m out here? I want to be someone who’s worth her regard, and I won’t come home until I am.”
After that stunning revelation, Sanji couldn’t find anything to say except, “Eat your damn mushrooms. That’s a start.”
