So, today (6/6/06), I went to go see the remake of the The Omen (just like what seemed to be about half the adult population of my town).

I went to the 6:50 pm showing, after buying my ticket from ticket station #006. And my ticket cost...

$8.00 with student discount. Expensive-ass motherfuckers, raising ticket prices again.

Having not seen the first production of The Omen, I can't offer any testimonial on how faithful it was to the original. Overall, a well-constructed movie, but not an exceptional one. Worth seeing once, and maybe picking up used from your local movie store.

I very much enjoyed the Vatican slideshow at the beginning, linking up the recent spate of natural and manmade disasters to the Book of Revelations. You could tell it had gone into production before John Paul II died, though--the actor they had playing the Pope bore a remarkable resemblance to him instead of Emperor Popatine Pope Benedict XVI. The plot was good (as it typically is in movies that rate a remake), but with the exception of the actor playing Father Bennet and to a lesser degree the one playing the second Nanny, most of the acting was decent, but not blow-you-out-of-your-seat awesome.

The special effects, such as they were, were well done. The framing was decent, though not particularly inspired. The color themes, though, especially with the color red--DAMN, that was some good stuff. Strawberries, tomatoes, even frickin' jam was enough to make you go "HOLY CRAP! Someone's going to die soonlike yes!" I was very impressed with that and the makeup.

The set designs were okay, for the most part--like the framing, workmanlike, but not very inspired, with the exception of the dream sequences which were rather too short to count. The 666 wallpaper in Damien's room might have been overdoing it a bit, though.

Finally, I was slightly distracted from Damien himself by the persistent, nagging thought of "I liked the Antichrist from Good Omens better."

Experience-wise, it was less crowded then when I went to go see Fellowship of the Rings on opening weekend, but still pretty packed. The audience was suprisingly well-behaved for this area. The only major interruption was when some dumbass bitch showed up half an hour late and started yelling "Yo WALLIIIIIIIIIE!" to try and find her friends, and the audience responded with a near-unianimous "SHUT UP."

Also, got to meet a Dollfie girl who had brought her doll to see the movie. This was the first time I'd ever gotten to hold one, as they're usually covered in "DO NOT TOUCH OMG!" signs at cons.

Yeah, movies are always too expensive. That's why me and my dad go to the matinea one's that are usually under $6. You know what's also annoying at theaters, people who talk and you can hear them whispering and it sounds like the loudest sound ever cause everyone is quiet.

It's $9 for a normal adult ticket now. So expensive. Arg.

We have what Tiff lovingly calls "ghetto-ass chickenhead" audiences locally--they scream, they shout at the people in the movie ("GIRL! Don't open that door! He gonna KILL you!"), they throw things at the screen, they show up forty minutes late and spend the rest of the movie going "What happenin'? Whodatiz?" Having only one major interruption during a popular movie was actually pretty good for this area. Whispering would be an improvement.

oh my lord (blasphemy!) - I could not stop laughing at your Emperor Popatine comment; I am wheezing even as I type this.

So it's worth going to see? We saw the trailer for it in X3 and the part that caught my attention was the whole "Damien! This is all for you!" jumping speech. Creepy. But then the rest of it got all flashy and blow-em-uppy - which part did the movie actually live up to? (curious).

Btw - can I friend you? (I just did, so let me know if I'm not allowed :) I've been going back and reading through your OP fic list, and bemoaning the fact that I missed them in real-time, and getting the urge to comment on stuff that's several months old.

[Bizarro coincidence? My friends and I are planning what we call a "pope-party". We got together before my one friend left for Japan on the weekend that the Pope was dying (we did not plan that part). However, we decided to assure our eternal damnation by betting on what time he would die at. Winner/loser had to host traveller-friend's return party. I won, and my partner lost - I was closest, he was furthest - either way, we decided it was destiny that we would host the party , and so now a year later, we are planning what we can't help constantly referring to as "the Pope Party". Anyway, a long and probably somewhat boring story to tell you that your newly invented term is *so* getting incorporated into the blasphem-a-licious festivities.]

I'm sorry, but the Pope really does look like Emperor Palpatine. I keep waiting for him to flip up the hood on his red papal cloak and for the Imperial March to start playing--Emperor Popatine.

And yes, The Omen is worth a trip to the movies for, and it has some well-done creepy moments. Go forth, see the Antichrist.

I like being friended. It makes me happy, and I'm glad you did. ^_^
