Apparently, someone threw out the entire contents of our apartment's downstairs storage area without asking us. Doing this required cutting off a lock. I had some important documentation stored down there, along with quite a bit of sentimental stuff and a few books.

I. Am. Pissed.

Holy crap.

I'm a bit speechless.

...but holy crap. I hope it's out there, somewhere, and that you get it back. That is extreme, ridiculous asshattery.

Gah. *HUG*

I doubt it was kept--the stuff down there wasn't valuable unless you knew what to look for. I lost enough paperwork to have my identity stolen, plus ~$200 worth of manga and some art and photos that can't be replaced.

DD: So if they had to cut off a lock, does that mean it was thief?

Technically yes and no. Whoever cut it off was a resident, since the storage area is behind a locked door that only people living in that building get the keys to. I'm betting it's the guy who just moved into Apartment L--we had our stuff in L;s storage space, since our apartment's was being used by another apartment when we moved in and the rental office said "Oh, just use whichever one's free." If he cut it off and threw stuff out without consulting with the rental office, it probably qualifies as theft. If he asked the rental office about "abandoned property in his storage space" and they came down and emptied it out for him, that doesn't count as theft. OTL

Well that sucks. I would totally get out your Renters insurance to see if they can help at all and (although it doesn't really make up for the loss of your stuff) demand that your complex comp your rent for a month or two in compensation.

Renter's insurance might help, since the stuff was locked up (they might also decline, saying everything stored outside the physical apartment was stored at our own risk), but I doubt our apartment complex will. The person who tossed our stuff was likely the "rightful" owner of the space--none of the apartments in our building actually match up with the storage space listed on their doors. When we moved in and the storage for our apartment was in use, the complex told us to just grab whichever one was free. Apparently, this guy didn't bother to make that call, and tossed all of our stuff so he'd have somewhere to park his goddamn bike.

Tiff pounded on his door last night, but no one answered. She's going to get in touch with the rental office today, so hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this.

Likely the person who just moved into Apartment L. None of the apartments in our building match up with their storage spaces (we were using L, since E1 was being used by the people in F when we moved in), but this asshole didn't bother calling the rental office to find that out.

I don't think it'd hold up in court--we WERE using his storage space, and a judge could well decided that there was no reasonable obligation for him to ask around to find out whose stuff that was. Or a judge could decide that he should have contacted the rental office and rule in favor of us. Or he might have contacted the rental office about "abandoned property" and had them clear it out, in which case our beef is with the rental office, not him.
