I've made a couple of donations to Equality CA over the past couple of months, so I'm on their mailing list. I got this email today:

If lies don’t work, then maybe threats and blackmail will.

Yesterday, donors and supporters of Equality California began receiving threatening letters from the “Yes on 8” campaign leadership.

These letters threatened to “expose” the donors listed on our website if they don’t donate to the “Yes on 8” campaign and refrain from supporting Equality California in the future.

That’s how low the other side is willing to go. They are willing to threaten organizations and other donors who support efforts to protect youth and seniors, as a way to raise money in their effort to eliminate our right to marry.

...

The letter, sent on their campaign letterhead, was signed by four members of the group's executive committee and suggests our donors withdraw their support for their own good. It demands an equivalent donation or else:

“Were you to elect not to donate comparably, it would be a clear indication that you are in opposition to traditional marriage. You would leave us no other reasonable assumption. The names of any companies…that choose not to donate…to ProtectMarriage.com…will be published.

…We will contact you shortly to discuss your contribution.”

I have no words. NONE. Please Californians, for the love of all that is right and just in this world, vote No on 8.

On the upside, I did learn that my internets and phone providers both support No on 8. :D

Great Ghu. What do they think they are, the McCarthy Mafia? Eesh. Strong-arm tactics are SO last millenium.

Oh my god. That's terrible! The whole campaign is sick and disgusting, but to threaten people!

I hope they get their asses sued.

I really like how if you support the option to have a gay marriage it automatically means that you OPPOSE "traditional" marriages... that whole letter, and the general idiocy behind it, is seriously fucked up.

Well, that seems like pretty nasty methods to get people's support, don't they? They don't seem to be making much of a case towards getting the public's simpathy that way; no matter the polite tone of those letter, there's no mistaking the threatening purpose...
Sad, really.
Everyone has the right to support whoever they want, after all...

I hope the people/organizations who receive these threatening letters have contacted attorneys. This is plainly extortion. Blackmail in it's truest form.

Shame on the Yes on 8 committee... and hopefully a lawsuit or 20, too!!!
