Speaking of hats, alucardblue looks eeriely hot in an Ace hat. Conclusion: Ace's hat is sympathetically enchanted with Sexy.

That being said, I hope that Devil Fruit whatever that got done to him is reversible. And I hope that Chopper gets to do some serious pwning without getting the crap beaten out of him first.

And I still can't believe that Usopp, who until these last couple of chapters had yet to miss anything he aimed at, managed to fuck up the most important shot of his life. Seriously, WTF? *doooooooooom*

Now I need to go reread Raptus Regalis just to make myself feel better and marvel at the apparent eerie level of GMTA-ness among One Piece fanauthors.

Hmm... I really liked the treatment of Sanji and Nami's characters in 403. I had read spoilers and been dreading it, but I felt it stayed in-character while not having them be too pathetic. Sanji at least acknowledged that Califa was Bad Mojo and tried to get her to give the key up as best he could. And Nami appears ready to lay the serious smackdown on Califa for taking advantage of her nakama right at his weakness! That lady's gonna wish she never ate the Laminate-Sanji Laminate-Sanji Fruit, or whatever she ate. Something about Nami defending poor stupid Sanji seems cool to me.

But I hear you on Sogeking's sudden burst of ineptitude. I'm really hoping this is him at his "awkward teen" stage between pre-W7 Usopp and post-W7 Brave Warrior Usopp, and he will emerge from his Sogeking persona like a butterfly of competence.

I'm also irrationally annoyed at Usopp's new commercial break animation. They couldn't have let the darts hit the bullseye once? That's like showing Sanji with a big old plate of awful food, or Nami giving away money, or something.

I did enjoy Nami in 403. Her stealing the key was priceless, and I seriously hope she performs a hardcore smiting on Kalifa. Her new-and-improved ClimaTact looks to be up to the challenge.

Sanji on the other hand...he could have pwnt Kalifa easily. He nearly hit her a few times without trying, and all he had to do was nail her once. And he didn't, and he got turned into a shiny knickknack. Arg. I've got little doubt that Sanji will redeem himself and I do love his chivalrous nature, but right now I'm very frustrated with him.

I haven't seen this animation, but crap, Usopp could nail a target fifty times out of fifty from farther away than a regulation dartboard is back when he was still fifteen or so. Darts should not be a problem.

Yeah, Califa was clearly no match for Sanji. Still, I can't think of any way it could have come out better without making me feel Sanji was OOC. It might be different if Califa had been holding a sword over Robin's neck or something, but as is, Sanji kicking Califa would just seem strange to me. Since he did try to find some way to compromise, demonstrating his strength to try and get her to just give up the key, I feel satisfied that he was doing his best to resolve his conflicting needs and thus I am not annoyed. I also might be more annoyed by it if Luffy, Zoro and Usopp weren't all willing to fight women, making Sanji with his 'kishidou' the odd one out.

Yes, and the others all got great commercial animations. Nami's shows a map and pinwheel and tangerine, Sanji's shows a beautiful plate of food, Luffy's shows his hat, Usopp's shows... a bunch of darts which are far from the bullseye. Hmph. Just insulting, is what it is.

I hope you don't mind my commenting like this. The last chapter did make me think about my view of what happened, and I'm a little starved for intelligent OP discussion.

I do wonder what will happen if Kalifa actually manages to injure Nami. Sanji's kishidou will tear him in half, because Nami got hurt because of him.

We've seen flashes of this before, but I dismissed most of it as Sanji being a horny bastard who will do a great deal to get laid--which is how I think he tries to portray himself, frankly, because his kishidou is a serious weakness. He knows it, and that's why he tried to fake out Kalifa in the first place.

I seriously hope we get Sanji-backstory on that soonlike--there's got to be an interesting story behind someone having that strong of an aversion to striking women. Hell, in a kicking fight women have the advantage. They're better balanced and their legs are stronger.

I've noticed that the anime (what I've seen of it, that is) is a little rougher on Usopp than the manga tends to be. I know he gets used for comedy relief and as a foil for tension a lot (rather like Chopper), but he winds up being either a failure or useless a bit more often in the anime.

On the other hand, his one filler arc episode with the fireworks was pretty awesome.

Nah, have at. As some of the comments on my other posts have shown, I'm a bit of a talker. I'm lucky in that I've infected almost all of my RL friends with One Piece, but I always welcome more fandom discussion.

Yes... Sanji practically seems to see women as some kind of mysterious other species or something. Some of it might be from growing up in a predominantly male environment (Baratie seems to be lacking in female employees) but he was already ten when he met Zeff and Baratie had plenty of female customers, so that can only explain so much. Zeff doesn't strike me as being the kind of teacher who'd emphasize gender differences... heck, he'll kick little kids around, I doubt he'd hesitate to seriously strike a real female opponant. Even a weaker one, if she were a threat to someone he cared about and stupid enough to challenge him. Maybe something Sanji picked up from a female encounter instead. Like an anti-Kuina. That could be very interesting... Maybe even Sanji's unknown parents?

The anime subtly (and not so subtly) changes a lot of the characters. I think Usopp and Nami get the worst of it, though. Even apart from outright filler, Nami laughing after giving a scolding in a scene is cut out, or a 'hilarious' cowardly new line from Usopp is added. I've thought about going through the anime and manga to do a list of little changes like that, based on characters. I think the problem is that the characters superficially resemble a lot of character stereotypes, but they're actually far more complicated than that. The complication seems to confuse the animators, who then go, "Why hasn't Usopp done something funny? He's the comic relief!" or "Why would Nami act friendly?! She's the series Shrieking Harridan, cut that part out." At least Usopp's ability to get along with children seems to have seeped into the animators' heads in the fireworks filler... as opposed to that (IMHO) unbearable Loguetown filler.

I have a lot of IRL friends who like OP, they just don't like analysis, fanfics, that sort of thing. My fics are sort of an embarrassing secret.

On a similar note, i have now purchased a pink cowboy hat which I am perfectly happy to sacrafice towards the OP gods to turn into an orange ace hat YAY.

I must admit I wasn't expecting Sanji to win the moment I found out who his opponent was. I was halfway expecting Kalifa to drug or poison the tea and Chopper having to save Sanji's ass, so I was actually rather pleased when Chopper saved Nami and Nami's going to defend Sanji. Nami needs to defend her boys more often. And this way's better than mine, because this way Sanji at least attempted to get the key.

I'm with you on the backstory, though. I want to know where Sanji got this kishido from, because I seriously doubt it was from Zeff and company. Of course, part of this desire is to see if it reconciles with the image I have of Sanji in my head. In my opinion, Sanji's weak in a lot of ways, but he seems fully aware of his weaknesses and protects them savagely, even if it means getting hurt himself. A hell of a lot of his badassery and dorkitude seemed designed to prevent anyone from getting close enough to hurt him - or figure out his weaknesses. I just wish I knew why he spends so much time protecting himself and his weaknesses when it's also obvious that he wants to protect the others as well.
