Title: Icarus
Series: One Piece.
One Piece: Not mine.
Rating: PG-13 for language.
Summary: Pre-Ace/Smoker. Ace has a dream. A reoccurring one. Full of thinly veiled foreshadowing. Crossposted to [livejournal.com profile] onepieceyaoi.

Ace was ten, and he dreamed of flying.

Effortless, soaring flight, so high that he ought to be dizzy and yet wasn’t. Shining blue ocean underneath him, perfectly clear blue sky above him, sun shining so bright and tempting that he had to go closer.

He should have turned back when the heat got uncomfortable, but he felt that there was something important for him just a little closer. Closer…closer…and then his whole body burst into flames.

He woke up gasping and sweaty. Luffy had snuck into his bed again, as he’d done fairly often since Shanks had left last month. As always, his insane little brother’s body generated an ungodly amount of heat. Probably why Ace had dreamed of fire.

Stupid dream. Stupid Luffy. Now he was too unsettled to sleep. Ace sighed and started practicing sailor’s knots on Luffy’s fingers as revenge.

****

Ace was thirteen, and he dreamed of flying.

This, in itself, was not unusual. He’d had the dream regularly every couple of months since he was ten. But in all the nights he’d dreamed about flight and fire, the dream hadn’t changed at all. This time, there was something a little different. There was a cloud in the sky. It was a long way off, but it was still there. Ace wondered what it meant.

Sunfire kissed his body, and this time he stood it for just a little longer before snapping awake.

****

Ace was seventeen, and he dreamed of flying.

He was leaving tomorrow, leaving to make his way in the world as a pirate. Luffy had been sulking about it for most of a week, but nothing could stop Ace from going. Tonight was his last night sleeping in his own bed.

The cloud was much closer now, floating at the same level that Ace flew at, not even a mile off. Sometimes, he felt tempted to go investigate it, but he always flew towards the sun instead. He knew what would happen, knew that the fire was coming, but he did it anyway.

Fire enveloped him, and this time he almost felt his body changing into raw flame before he woke up.

He wondered if Luffy would ever forgive him if he slipped off in the middle of the night.

Eh, the brat would live. Ace would leave him a note. He hated goodbyes anyway.

****

Ace was nineteen, and he dreamed of flying.

Earlier today, Whitebeard had offered him a Devil Fruit, half as a reward, half as a test. Ace had taken it, confident that it would be something he could handle. After all, if Luffy could master a Devil Fruit, Ace most certainly could.

Now his body burned with fever as it struggled to adjust to the cursed energies flowing through it. His skin felt like it was being seared from the inside out, and the ship’s doctor said that Ace ought to be dead with as high as his fever was. Some part of him said that giving in to the fruit’s curse would make him feel so much better, but he feared that if he was swept away on those currents, he’d never come back. He’d fought with it for hours until he finally passed out in a combination of exhaustion and delirium.

The dark cloud was nearly close enough to blot out the sun this time, but it wasn’t quite there yet. Ace soared, hoping to quench his fever in a greater heat. He burst into flames, feeling it in every nerve of his body, more intense and vivid than usual.

He woke up, and the fire didn’t go away. His body blazed with agony for half a moment as Ace’s defenses to the curse crumbled. It hurt, it hurt…

…it felt like the most natural thing in the world. His reoccurring dream made flesh. He danced and laughed and ate and grew, delighted with his new form.

The shouts registered dimly at first, so loud was the song of the fire all around him. It wasn't until the flames that were his body were suddenly deluged with something that made him hurt, made him cold, made him weak, he noticed what exactly it was that he was currently eating.

Wood. Pitch. Fabric. Some interesting chemicals that made him a little dizzy. There was some metal that wasn’t burning terribly well, but was running about on the floor in an entertaining manner.

Hell, he’d just set the infirmary on fire.

Fire. On a ship at sea.

Oh shit.

****

Ace was twenty, and he didn’t need to dream to fly.

This Smoker fucker had the balls to first try to arrest him, then dick around with his little brother. He deserved to have the shit beaten out of him. They both changed to Logia form at nearly the same moment, and as Ace threw himself at Smoker, he saw the dark cloud of the man’s smoke blotting out the sun completely. It tugged at his mind, but he pushed it aside. He needed to focus on the moment.

Then they collided, and Ace blazed forth with all of his might. He was going to teach this Marine a new definition of pain.

And suddenly, as they swirled together in the sky over Nanohana, Ace found himself matched. Precisely equal in strength. Smoker smothered his flames as fast as Ace consumed his smoke, and they floated together for just a split second in perfect balance.

With a wrench, they pulled apart. Ace wasn’t sure which one of them had backed out of the dizzying union first, and he wasn’t sticking around to find out. He had other things to do, and though his blood boiled for more, he couldn’t afford to engage in what promised to be a lengthy and very intimate fight.

He hit the ground, laid down a shimmering net of flame and hot air as easy as breathing, and ran. The disoriented shouts of the Marines were music to his ears.

Smoke and fire. A cloud over the sun.

He’d see that Marine again. A certain dream made him sure of that.

Ace launched himself into the hot desert sky and flew.

That's a nice theory on how it would feel after eating a Devil's Fruit, particularly one that turned you into a raging fireball. Where do you come up with these interesting ideas? :)

You're making me run out of compliments to give you without sounding repetitive. This fic is... uhhh, how does 'inspired' sound to you? Enjoyable? Inspires happy-happy joy-joy feelings in all who read it. XD

I'll come up with some better comments later on, I swear.

I'm not sure where the idea came from. It just struck me that for destructive Logia like that, the first transformation can't be pleasant or particularly safe to others. Ace strikes me as the type to fight the Devil Fruit for control, especially to try and look good in front of Whitebeard.

Wow, this is superb (wow, first time I used that word and spelled it o.O). Everything about this is so tranquil and down-hearted. Hell, he’d just set the infirmary on fire. Fire. On a ship at sea. Oh shit. Best lines ever! XD

Fire on a ship at sea is a pretty big problem--you don't have anywhere to run to. Definitely "oh shit" worthy. Poor Ace.

I swear to god that I only like One Piece because of the smut you and Pax put out. They've taken it off the air here (Canada) but I'm not particularly bothered. Why? 'Cause you and Pax continue to write such wonderful stuff. Spam away hun. It is very much appreciated (Smoker/Ace*sigh*).

It's the possibility of the smut and the pure longing/angst. Of course, I wouldn't be opposed to more smut....

oOoOo... I like this. The whole dream sequence as foreshadowing was an awesome approach. I also liked the part about where Ace got his Devil's Fruit and the sensations he endured before finally succuming to it's power. Delicious :D

I'm glad you liked the dream and didn't think it was either too weird or too heavy-handed. ^_^;

Poor Ace. Logia Fruits suck until you get the hang of them.

I like writing about Devil Fruit users and what using their abilities must feel like--it's the sci-fi fan in me.

And Ace is so meeeeeeeeeean to poor Luffy. Sailor's knots. I bet he used to tie Luffy to trees with his own arms.

*laughs* Yeah, Devil Fruit users are just like writing Mutants for me too. They can definitely be fun. ^^

Poor Luffy"? *falls down howling* I'm sure Luffy tortured Ace right back... *flashes to a whole 'he's touching me, Makino!' 'No I'm not!' from across the room thing* " brothers and all. *snickers*

I really like the imagery and repetition. And yeah, I bet Ace and Luffy were absolutely horrible to each other as kids XD.

We already know that Ace used to beat the shit out of Luffy on a regular basis, and that Luffy's never won in a fight against him. We also know that Ace is at a severe disadvantage when it comes to eating with Luffy around, what with the passing out midmeal and all. So, Ace had to beat the crap out of Luffy and hang him up in a tree somewhere so that he wouldn't starve to death. Ha ha, go Ace!

I love the little vignettes of life like this. Especially regarding his first change to logia. Silly boy. Fire and ships are a no-no. =3 And unf for their fight. *wibbles*
