So then. As a promo for the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, M&Ms has put out a couple of limited-edition candies.

The ones I am currently eating while trying not to giggle are called "Pirate Pearls." They're entirely in pale cream and white colors, and made from white chocolate. There are a few more in a bag than your average M&Ms--enough, perhaps, to make one a necklace.

The ones I haven't tried yet are called "Jack's Gems."

WHO IN THEIR MARKETING DEPARTMENT THOUGHT THESE NAMES WERE A GOOD IDEA?

I picked mine up at CVS. I'd try 7/11--they usually get the promo candies in before everyone else.

Awesome! 7/11 is the one place I can walk to from my parents' house. I'm getting me some pirate booty tomorrow. XD

*snicker*

Oh, dear...

*cracking up all over again*

I thought I'd be done laughing in order to write a coherent reply... guess not...

*snerk*

I started giggling:
~when my roommate told me about them last week,
~when I saw them in the store,
~when I bought them,
~when I opened the bag,
~and while I was typing the entry.

I don't blame you at all.

Just my luck... I'll forget all about this until the day I go to see the movie in the theatres... and then I'll be laughing insanely during the whole movie. People will be looking at me as if I were crazy.

I'm doomed.

"Pirate Pearls".... XD XD

Of course. Who wouldn't want Jack's Gems in their mouth? Or to swallow some delicious Pirate Pearls?

Heh. I've been seeing the Jack's Gems and Pirate Gold m&ms for weeks now. I haven't seen the Pirate Pearls, though. I'm still tempted to get Jack's Gems, though. They look pretty.

Lucky you--they just hit our area. I haven't seen any of the Pirate Gold ones yet, so I guess we're even. XD

That's beautiful. Either the people at Mars Co. are really innocent, or we're dirty, dirty-minded people.

....I'm guessing the second one.

It gets worse if you sit down and think about the process behind this sort of thing. Somebody had to think this was a good idea, write it down on a piece of paper, convince a committee that it was a good idea, do a presentation on why it was a good idea, and spend months in package design on it. And somehow, it never occurred to them (what with Johnny Depp's sexiness and whatnot) that calling things you put in your mouth "Pirate Pearls" and "Jack's Gems" is not a good idea.

Impressive, eh? There's a marketing executive somewhere out there with Pirate Pearls on his resume.

I dunno; the more I think about it, the more I think maybe it was actually very clever. Perhaps the presentation went like this:

"Innocent people will think "oh, that's a cute name", and just get them, and smarter people will buy them because of the humor factor! Whether they get it or not, either way they'll buy it!"

I saw those myself and snickered. It's awful when you can't tell a good dirty joke to anybody.

Yes, it is. Especially when the other people in the store are looking at you funny for laughing in the candy aisle.

We get candy, but we also get George W. Bush. I'm not sure that balances. D:

Of course they're a good idea. All Pirates of the Caribbean stuff is marketed to teenage girls, and most of them would just love access to Jack's Gems *snerk*.

Do you really want that in your obituary?
