Square Enix Talks of In-Game Advertising and Patches.

WHAT. THE. FUCK. How do you come up with this sort of thing? Do you go, "Hey, I think I'll take everything people hate about PC gaming and put it on console too! We'll put out shitty, buggy games, make people buy them in installments, and paste ads all over everything! They'll love it! BRILLIANT!" *headdesk*

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] alucardblue for finding that.

In other news, the fanfiction panel presentation is starting to give me flashbacks to the time in college that I was supposed to give a ten minute speech and went on for forty-five. I'm going to have to cut some of this to give us enough time for Q&A. What's sad is that I've devoted about ten hours into this presentation and I'm only halfway done. I haven't even started on the yuri portion. I NEED MOR PIKSHURS. More specifically, I need a Smoker/Zeff drawing (which I technically have) and permission to display it publically (which I don't). I had to haul out part of the Gravitation Megamix doujinshi for the yaoi portion. Ug, I hate that doujin and its asscam and its ever-spooging Shuichi, but it's useful as a bad example.

In related news, after unofficial legal consultation and some debate, we're writing our own badfic for this panel in order to keep our asses covered. The mainpage "State of the Fandom" screencaps are still going up, though. So far, Inu Yasha is fairing considerably better than One Piece, with only four out of seven visible fics being atrocities unto the fandom.

I don't do the PC gaming, but when I see the words "ad" and computer together, that's just calling for something to go wrong.

Hmmm...I heard Gravitation and I'm curious (even if you said it's bad, I'm still curious). So Inuyasha has more good fics. than One Piece? ...DX That makes me a sad panda.

They're trying to stick ads on console games too. That's the sucky part.

Gravitation Megamix is the most graphic doujinshi I've ever seen. There is hardcore live action gay porn out there that pales in comparison. X_x

On FF.net, InuYasha does have a higher proportion of goodfic than One Piece. Then again, the One Piece section of FF.net is extraordinarily bad--hence why we're all here on LJ. XD

Now that's just not right. Isn't it enough that they have commercials and magazine ads and even ads on the internet?

O.O Is the art any good since there's lots of action?

TRUE DAT CHIBI-TRILLIAN! LJ keeps us alive when other sites fail XD

I'm surprised to hear that there are more OP badfics than Inuyasha. I seldom encounter bad OP fiction (but then again, I do avoid FF.net). And the Inu-yasha fandom is infested with mary-sues, marty-stus, and god knows what else (from what I've seen).

Eveery other recent OP fic on FF.net is either straight self-insert ("me'n'my freinds fall into teh one peice world lolololol") or Mary Sue ("Sanji encounters a mysterious lady stranger on a new island. What is her dark secret? Sanji/OC plz review!"). InuYasha, on the other hand, goes for multichapter epic stinkers. I think the sheer volume of InuYasha fic tends to drown most of the bad oneshots.

I'm not surprised. I actually spend the time going through them all to get to the good ones (I have found a few gems, including a fairly decent het AU with the crew in the deep south USA looking for treasure - and most of xparrot's stuff is there as well). Most other fandoms I don't bother, because of the sheer volume of badfic (OP is still relatively small compared to most), unless someone recommends an author, and then I'll take a look. If I like, then I peek at that author's recs and find more good fic (good authors rarely recommend badfic unless they're related or think the badfic has some major merit to it). And yes, I cheat. ^_^

True. It's humanly possible for someone to go though all seventy pages of the OP section--not so for the 1883 pages of the InuYasha section. X_x

You're going to show THAT Megamix to the semi-virginal eyes of the public? More power to you and your bravado.I hope they don't lynch you.

I'm surprised about the state of fanfiction, since OP is one of the few where there IS consistently well written fic, or at least a larger ratio than the bad fic, but then I try to stay away from the Pit Of Voles as much as possible. But then that might because the fandom's small enough that the collective hive-mind has an almost telepathic link to the need for crack. Of anime fandoms the worst written ones I'd have to say are DBZ and Yugioh since mainstream always produces more new fans that test the fanfic waters out on ff.net. The trend then has most fans leaving it for LJ (usually because at that stage, they feel the need to move beyond the R rating or formatting problems).

Plus, everyone starts out writing badfic, usually with a Mary Sue in the darkest depths of their desktop. FF.net more than anything acts as a slow filter for fans to compare and contrast and eventually recognise what are the debateable 'signs' of good fanfiction and what isn't. I tried to write an essay about fandom once, and I know the horrors of trying to squish something with that many multifacets into an all encompassing and hopefully informative/yet entertaining piece of text. Good luck with the panel.

[livejournal.com profile] paxnirvana also did a very helpful list of fandom/fanficcer opinions here.

Given any thoughts to: use of slang; canon vs fanon; fandom wank; pairing wars etc?

And now I just know I'm just adding to your length cutting pain.

Sounds pretty thorough, though to save for length you can probaly group OOCs and character bashing together (or just make it a sentence such as, "An extreme level of OOC can lead to character bashing where character X is no longer recognisable as their canon selves besides superficial looks. These are them infused with every negative stereotype available to the author's puny brain..." etc etc).

What about Reccing?

If you're going to give examples of bad fic and draw so heavily from ff.net, might be helpful to give a few links to where people can browse good fics through recs, such as [livejournal.com profile] recsrainbow, [livejournal.com profile] crack_van and Fleeting Fancies (which you can google because I can't remember the address now).

... some minor points of fanfic dos and donts are also found on [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants.

I'm using like the only panel with no visible cock or asshole in it--the one where Yuki's drinking a bottle of water and looks like he's about to doze off while Shuichi rides him and squeals. Seriously, that doujin traumatized me--I watch live-action gay porn and still thought it was too graphic. X_x

The Pit is where the OP dub watchers go, to give you a hint. And there are about 19034893724 "Luffy's musician" fics there. *headdesk*

I know full well that everyone starts off with badfic--some of my first stuff BIT, and I plan on using it for the panel. We're considering this panel a vain attempt to shorten the learning curve for the five or so people who will actually show up to a 1:30am panel (at least we can discuss lemons without censoring ourselves). Hell, one of my primary recommendations is to get your ass out there and take a creative writing course.

Oh, yes. I've finally taken to avoiding anything with the word 'Zolo' in the summary. That being said, I've noticed two decent musician fics. One was gen and the musician didn't join the crew in the end. The other was making fun of all the Mary Sue musicians and had three seperate ones join at the same time who are now trying to figure out creative ways to bump each other off.
